Camera Shy

Hey ladies, I want to chat with you for a minute. I know that nobody likes unsolicited advice but I just have to get this out. Why aren't there more pictures of us? Seriously, think about it. Sure, there's the formal family portraits at the studio and the wedding pictures and the occasional Christmas pic. But I'm talking about pictures reflecting the candid joy of daily living.

I was looking for a picture of Lillian & me for the Mother's Day post and I was shocked...shocked I tell you...to find there were only a handful. You wanna know why? Are you really, really sure? Cause it ain't pretty, I can tell you that. Well, here goes. There are two primary reasons.

1) I am often the photographer and therefore behind instead of in front of the camera.

2) When Jeff did try to take our picture, I stopped him because I did have any make up on or I was wearing grubby sweatpants or I had bed head or _________ (fill in blank with silly excuse).

Ladies, join with me to set aside our vanity. Hand the camera to a friend and get out there, bed head and all. Let this be a reminder to take a pic with your friends and family TODAY. Still camera shy? To get you started, here are some pictures of me that I just took. No makeup. Bed head. Grubby sweatpants. You know, the works!

Holy cow...did I just publish crazy pictures of myself onto the World Wide Web where everyone can see them?! What was I THINKING?! They'll probably end up on the news or something. "Crazy Blogger Publishes Horrid Pictures. Suprisingly No Drugs Were Involved. News at 6." And because I don't watch the news, I won't know. Everyone else will know because they are responsible adults who actually watch the news. So they'll just point and say "there goes the crazy blogger lady". And I'll look behind me because I didn't watch the news and don't know they're talking about me...

I need to go lie down.

I have the same problem. I have yet to see a Christmas morning picture that doesn't make me shudder. Also, I am too the one behind the camera. My husband isn't quick enough for me. I think I learned it from my mom. I was trying to find a picture of her to put on my piano a few years ago and the only one I could find was from my wedding. That was almost 11 years ago.

Hey Lori,
Add this to your list...I'm just not as thin as I used to be and who wants to see that in a picture? I'd be hard pressed to find a picture of me and the boys except for last Christmas AND I didn't send it out because...well...I felt like I looked like I'd eaten five (or forty) too many Christmas cookies. Thanks for the wake up call and reminder that it doesn't really matter how I look, as long as I'm capturing something I'll want to remember.

It is quite funny that you posted this topic today. This evening after dinner I was taking pictures of Scott playing with the kids and was just thinking about how I am not in many photos. If I am in photos with the kids it is because I beg Scott to take pictures of me with the kids because neither one of use really like to have our picture taken this rarely happens. I like the photos you posted :) Real life. It was also nice to see the pictures of what Jeff has been up to lately. Thanks for keeping us up to date. Beth

I will join you! My delema is that my teeth always look HUGE, so I erase the pictures I do have! THERE, I SAID IT, I have horse teeth...and big gums. My smile is sooo big because I can't contain my happiness, maybe I should "embrace that" instead of "erase that"!

PS, you are beautiful in those non-make up, non-perfect look pictures! Work it, own it...

Great pictures, thanks for the laugh! But you looked good, really. Thanks for the encouragement to not let our hang ups get in the way of picture taking.

Criminey sister...you are too funny! Thanks for the reminder. You are right...stop the excuses, and I love the "crazy blogger lady pictures". The kids will LOVE the pictures of their crazy blogger auntie.

Oh, now you've done it! How will the rest of us get away with those excuses now? :)

Lori - been catching up on your posts and enjoying your writing! Thanks for being so honest about the hard things and showing us there's room for a good laugh in the midst of grief as well. (Oh, and tell Jeff - nice work on the yard!)
