Say it with me now...sab-ba-ti-cal

I have a question for you my internet friendz. Something wonderful and magical is going to happen in my humdrum little life next year. Due to my ten years of dutiful service, my company is giving me this mysterious thing known as a SABBATICAL! Ooooooo. Ahhhhhh.

Apparently this great company o mine will grant me 5 consecutive weeks away from work to do whatever I want. Paid! (Well, I do have to pony up half of the time out of my PTO bank but who cares? It's 5 whole weeks of work-free bliss!) All this just for showing up for the last 10 years. Or at least most of it. I have taken 2 maternity leaves and a medical leave to care for Lillian. But graciously, they don't seem to mind those hiatuses. Hiati? Hiatians? Whatever.

Which brings me back to my question.

If you had 5 weeks to do whatever* you want,
whenever you want, what would you do?

*There are a few parameters to keep in mind in this scenario. 1) Assuming the inventors have not cut you in on their new found windfall, you are not independently wealthy. 2) You have a husband and an 18-month-ish old baby who will probably want to tag along on your sabbatical adventures. 3) You have an entire year to plan for this which probably means you'll change your mind several times before ultimately sitting around the house watching daytime television for 5 weeks.

5 WEEKS? I would:

* spend a few days of not going anyhere

* then I'd sort through baby photos and do some scrapbooking

* then I'd pre-address my Christmas labels for cards (and the cards if I have them!)

* then clean out my closets

* then have a yard sale

* then buy myself some new outfits with the money I made

* then spend a few days at various points in Oregon, which I just haven't seen enough of since I've lived here

* then I would return with 7-10 days to spare so I could get caught up on laundry and relax from the stress of going on vacation, preferably with a book, DVD, or some crafty project I'd been putting off because I had "no time".

* then I'd give the house a good cleaning over several days, so I don't wear myself out

* THEN I'd go back to work without the stress of everything I couldn't get done at home (because I'm a full-time worker, wife, mother, homemaker, shuttle service, teacher, housekeeper, cook, shopper, and all of those other things that take up my days) and know I made the most of my time off.

But that's just me.... :-)

Well... hmmm... When exactly would this be??? Assuming we are still here I would go to DC to visit my favorite aunt & uncle and see the amazing history of my nation's capital :) How is that for a suggestion :) You can stay with us to cut the cost down and free baby sitting to see the non-kid friendly sites that are still a must see. Just a thought :) Personally though I would go on a cruise too :) And because I love Disney so much and now have kids to justify going I would do another Disney cruise!! Of course also just hang out at home in my pjs for days too :) Can't wait to hear what wonderful plans you make!

Five Weeks.
I would spend part of it in Mexico with my husband's family and part of it traveling around Mexico. A week at a beach woudl be included somewhere.

Hmmmm...5 weeks - well, I'd definitely fit in a trip to AZ to visit your favorite sister and brother-in-law and nephews!!! You know it's awesome here in the winter - lounge around the pool - play at the parks - just be really active OUTSIDE!

Just a suggestion! ;-)

WHEEE! that is awesome!
I would like to offer my home, following Beth's lead. We're 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, 4 from New York and 2ish from Washington DC...and we're in Hershey, PA with a lovely amusement park and the chocolate factory (that pretty much encapsulates what we have to offer in Central PA - oh yeah, and the Weight Lifting Hall of Fame... try to contain the excitement)

I would go to Hawaii for at least 3 weeks and stay with my family (sorry, other side of the fam) and just enjoy the time together since I rarely get to see them.

I would go to Oregon for at least a week, hang out at my parents' cabin (you could always go there, too! FREE!), eat at all my favorite restaurants in PDX, etc.

I would read book after book after book, no matter where I was.

I would cook to my heart's delight (and Matthew would do the dishes, which is our deal - ye who cooks, does not wash)

(don't hate me) If I was in Oregon or PA, I would go to the gym every day and take as long as I wanted to work out (okay, it's actually the socializing that takes all that time, but sometimes the workout deserves to be enjoyed, not rushed)

I could go on...

I would go stay in Loreto Bay for a few weeks. Hey! We have a house there and you guys are welcome to stay for as long as you'd like (for free, of course) - how convenient that I'd pick that spot! It's got great sport fishing and a nice relaxing vibe to it.
