Will this ever end?

The remodel has slowed to a snail's pace. I've been busy at work so I have not been able to hound the contractors in my usual polite way. So, they just haven't shown up. WHO DOES THAT?! Should I just not come to work unless my boss calls me everyday? I wouldn't get paid and I certainly wouldn't keep my job for long. So how do contractors get away with it? And more importantly, why am I paying them? I guess it's one of those life mysteries that we'll never really understand. ::sigh::

  • The plumbers (yes, we're still having plumbing woes) showed up for the final install on Thursday but left after only a few hours. They haven't been back since.
  • The cabinet maker, who is usually very prompt, has not returned our calls since Saturday.
  • And tile guy is supposed to do the back splash this week. He went to Disneyland over the weekend and we haven't been able to reach him since.
  • Finally, the icing on the cake, our cork flooring is officially a bust. Jeff tried to install the "easy click" floor planks with no success. We then decided to hire a professional who declared it impossible after just a few hours. Vindication for Jeff but frustrating for everyone.

The next time I consider buying a fixer-upper, would somebody smack me? It seems that this will never end. I'm sure after time has passed, I'll feel differently but until then, I JUST WANT THIS DONE.

On the upside, the granite is in and it is gorgeous. We debated whether to spend the dough for granite and I think we made the right choice. And the company returned the cork flooring, cut pieces and all. We know have a strand bamboo floor acclimating before installation the end of the week.
Once we get some contractors back on the job, this thing should really get moving. If I squint really hard and sort of tilt my head to the side, I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I know it seems long...but let me tell you from the outside, the kitchen is absolutely gorgeous...even w/o some appliances installed, and no floor, and, and ... It really looks amazing. If you need a reminder just how far you have come, take a look at a before picture! I can hardly wait to see it all finished...in person! I bet you are saying that too! :-) I just love the way the lighting and the cabinets and the granite all shine...it's awesome!

It looks beautiful. I am very envious of the undermount sink! I can't wait to go to Texas and spend our (hardly) earned dollars on a new fancy kitchen, with the granite, of course!

It looks so amazing! I know it has been frustrating to say the least, but all the calls and hard work is really paying off!! Thanks for being a reminder to me of why to stay in this rental even though it is not beautiful because or other option would be to buy a house to flip in 1-2 years. Well, I can imagine the remodeling stress you are living in right now with two kids running around too! So, thanks for being a reminder of why I should be appreciative of the roof over my head and not to look for anything else!!!! Again from an outsiders point of view it is looking amazing! You are on the home stretch now!! It will be done soon! Beth

Lori,
It already looks beautiful...I agree with your lovely sister...can't wait to see it in person. I feel the same way about a fixer...I think ours will finally be finished when the boys leave for college...and we're ready to sell.

Wow, your kitchen is headed for the cover of Better Homes. The refrigerator is soooo cool and the granite is fantastic. Love all that you are doing. Can't imagine what you are going thru for it was maddening enough having our house build by a contractor. It won't be long before all is well, but get the feeling that you guys will take on another adventure with your home soon again. Kathy
